Sour Supremely Foul
Dec. 6th, 2004 11:05 pmHooo boy. So this evening I tried an experiment. I decided to see if I could make fauxganoff vegan (beef stroganoff- with seitan instead of beef- though I've been told its not a true stroganoff because of the sour cream, that's what my family calls it). So, no egg noodles, no sour cream. Instead I used something called "Sour Supreme" thinking that it was soured up tofu similar to the tofu yogurt I've had. No, it was not. I tasted it, was surprised that the texture was so good, and then went "Feh! It tastes like margarine!" I loathe margarine. I can taste it in baked goods. Really. I hate it as much as boiled eggs, which is saying a lot. I looked at the ingredients list and lo, yes- hydrogenated soybean oil (aka margarine or at least close) was ingredient number 1, followed by over processed tofu, etc. Yuck! Mr. sarendipatree thought it was okay, but I could barely eat half a bowl and I'm still feeling sick over an hour later.
This experiment reinforces my general philosophy regarding vegetarianism/veganism: don't try and exactly duplicate animal products. It leads to all kinds of nasty chemicals in your food, unnecessary energy expenditures in the food chain and finally: foul tasting sour cream substitutes!
PS- The silly live journal spell checker wants me to change fauxganoff to "foxglove" I find this funny.
