I almost got my class to reflect on their own thinking today. But then class ended, and there wasn't time for me to wrap up my socratic excellence, so it didn't quite happen. I hope there were enough seeds set that they can reflect on their own. Damn, its so frustrating. They were all spouting off about how great bilingual education was, and how important it was for kids to understand multiple viewpoints via knowledge of multiple languages. The next question was, well, what about the many languages going extinct, is this a bad thing? Most said it was fine. Well, if multiple cultural view points as reflected in language are a good thing, the disappearance of said view points ought to be more problematic than it was for them. I wish there had been more time to explore that point. Oh well.
