Minnesota, hats off to thee
Jul. 8th, 2005 07:07 pmThanks to all who provided us with logistic support for our journey North: xymox101 and berroto for picking us up at the air port, suedetjazz for giving us a ride to the airport, and bobtshirt and wife for taking care of the kitties. At some point in the nearish future I'll have to have a dinner party for y'all.
Well, we had a lovely time in MN. So much so that we actually briefly talked about maybe moving back at some point. Then I remembered the hunch. The hunch is the thing I get due to the cold when all my back muscles seize up. It pretty much lasts all winter. Sigh... maybe if we both had cars. Houses are far, far better in MN than around here, for about the same prices, in addition to the lovely friends and family we have up there, so there are reasons it'd make a nicer place to settle long term. And we can navigate up there, unlike around here. But oh, that cold weather. Blech.
My parents were awesome. They let us use their car, put us up (mmm... nice bathtub, I miss it so) and helped fund our plane tickets. And my dad even made me strawberry rhubarb bars.
Convergance was really enjoyable. I played a lot of games, that was a good thing. Didn't drink too much, also a good thing. Hot tub was good. We made some excellent new friends even, who I hope visit us at some point.
Much good eating with good company happened. We went to Udupai Indian with Jj's mum, which was allright. Some things were far too salty and the service was just weird. Really weird. The indian joint near the hotel we went to on Sunday was far better, I thought. I also got a chance to eat tibetan food, which I'd never done before, the dish I had was very similar to other asian genres, so not exciting, but tasty. The only kinda novel thing in the dish I noticed was blackened dried red peppers.
Every time I go to MN I have a short list of restaurants I want to eat at, and I fail to eat at them. Next time I'm going to have to either be forceful about going certain places or just give up so I'm not disappointed. I think it'll be the latter, because I'm not all that chuffed about it this time around.
I loved seeing all of our friends in MN. Convergance was very handy for seeing folks, especially folks I hadn't seen for years. Jj's b-day party was excellent, and more people came to that than I think we know in NC. Which says a lot about our life down here I think. Suffice to say, in spite of the cool kids in NC, I need an urban area to really have a community (and Raleigh really doesn't count as urban, I don't think).
We actually saw almost everyone on our lists this trip, but it was a near thing and there were still some folks left out. I think next trip may have to be longer, and then hopefully not only will we see all the peeps we want to, but we'll also get some sleep. I'm pooped, and I slept long long into the afternoon today.
